Wayne knelt and said hello to this little girl, before asking her if she was, in fact, Charlee. However, she wouldn’t say anything. It was clear that she was in a bit of a state of shock. What stood out to Wayne more than anything was the fact that this girl was just covered in so much dirt.
According to him, she had leaves in her hair. But also, she was holding a baby bottle, all the while not saying anything. As he tried to put the pieces together, something eventually stood out for Wayne that hit him like a ton of bricks.
As he looked out into his backyard, Wayne was shocked by what he had laid eyes on. It was a girl. She was pretty small. She looked very young and had long, flowing blonde hair. She pretty much perfectly matched the description of Charlee.
She was just wandering around in his backyard, minding her own business as Charlee would. Wayne gave a huge sigh of relief. But of course, he couldn’t be 100% if it was her or not. He needed to see if it was for sure Charlee. So, he went out to check on her. But was it really her?
Please Let Her Be Safe
As he ran over to approach this girl whom he had found in his backyard, a million thoughts started to race through Wayne’s mind. Could this actually be Charlee? What was she doing in his backyard? Could this be some kind of wild coincidence?
But probably the most powerful thought on Wayne’s mind was a prayer he kept whispering to himself. “Please let this little girl be safe,” he said. All he wanted was for this girl to be OK. A primal sense of protectiveness swept over him. But soon, more clues about who this girl was started to bubble to the surface…
It was certainly a strange coincidence during this time to find this little girl covered in dirt and leaves, stranded in the middle of his backyard. But Wayne spotted something that helped him make up his mind as to whether she was Charlee.
After seeing the poster of her that had been distributed around town, he remembered the description of the “Frozen” pajamas she had been wearing that morning. And lo and behold, she saw the characters of Elsa and Olaf on her shirt. This finally confirmed that this scared little girl was the person everyone in town had been searching for. This was Charlee.
Bringing It All Back
The fact that Charlee was in his backyard was extremely meaningful for Wayne. He revealed that when he was just eight years of age, his little brother also went missing. "He had wandered away from the home and he had climbed three fences," he said in an interview with the “Courier-Journal.”
“They found him miles away from the house. It was actually my uncle that found him and he was dead." Having lived with that tragedy hanging over him for so long, the last thing he wanted was for the same thing to happen to Charlee. But it seemed like she was OK.
