The fact that Charlee was in his backyard was extremely meaningful for Wayne. He revealed that when he was just eight years of age, his little brother also went missing. “He had wandered away from the home and he had climbed three fences,” he said in an interview with the “Courier-Journal.”
“They found him miles away from the house. It was actually my uncle that found him and he was dead.” Having lived with that tragedy hanging over him for so long, the last thing he wanted was for the same thing to happen to Charlee. But it seemed like she was OK.
She Was Very Dirty
Wayne knelt and said hello to this little girl, before asking her if she was, in fact, Charlee. However, she wouldn’t say anything. It was clear that she was in a bit of a state of shock. What stood out to Wayne more than anything was the fact that this girl was just covered in so much dirt.
According to him, she had leaves in her hair. But also, she was holding a baby bottle, all the while not saying anything. As he tried to put the pieces together, something eventually stood out for Wayne that hit him like a ton of bricks.
It was certainly a strange coincidence during this time to find this little girl covered in dirt and leaves, stranded in the middle of his backyard. But Wayne spotted something that helped him make up his mind as to whether she was Charlee.
After seeing the poster of her that had been distributed around town, he remembered the description of the “Frozen” pajamas she had been wearing that morning. And lo and behold, she saw the characters of Elsa and Olaf on her shirt. This finally confirmed that this scared little girl was the person everyone in town had been searching for. This was Charlee.
The Dog Was Also Missing
Let’s take a step back to that fateful day when Charlee disappeared. Incredibly, Charlee wasn’t the only member of her family who went missing that day. Yes, that would have been enough to be worried about. When Beth was searching around the house and the neighborhood, she noticed that her beloved pit bull, Penny, was also nowhere to be seen.
What if they had both been kidnapped together? She called out Penny’s name to see if she would return to her familiar voice. But alas, she was not showing up. This brings us back to the moment when Wayne found Charlee in his backyard…
It turns out that when Wayne made his incredible discovery in his backyard, it wasn’t just Charlee who he found. As he approached her, he noticed that there was also a pit bull running around the garden, playing with the leaves. Surely enough, it was Penny. But the pit bull didn’t hang out too long.
As soon as Wayne arrived on the scene, Penny ran away and returned to the home to greet an incredibly relieved Beth. Wayne just knelt there with his jaw dropped. He couldn’t believe what had just unfolded and had no choice but to come to the following conclusion…
