After a brief reunion with her family at the sheriff’s office, Charlee was transported to the local hospital and wheeled in on a stretcher so that medics could check that she was OK. They checked to make sure she didn’t have any injuries after being lost in the woods.
According to the sheriff, she didn’t have anything serious. However, she did have some tick bites and did look dehydrated. Despite no severe physical problems, Charlee showed no signs of emotion, which was a red flag in and of itself. There were still some lingering questions that the authorities needed to answer.
A Reward Fit for a Dog
During that heartfelt reunion at the sheriff’s office, Charlee’s grandfather arrived with tears running down his face. He even brought her a stuffed animal as a token of how much he missed her. And Beth was quick to promise both Charlee and Penny all the treats in the world.
In fact, she gave the pit bull a plate full of hamburgers as her reward for staying by her granddaughter’s side. Some people would expect a cash reward for finding a missing person – but it’s safe to say that Penny would have been fine with a can of dog food. She really did hit the jackpot!
Everyone Came Together
The Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office was determined to share with the world just how grateful they were for how the community pulled together to bring one of their children home. “We cannot thank enough the firefighters, EMT’s, dispatchers, search teams, other public safety agencies and the volunteer searchers from the community,” they wrote on Facebook.
“Bullitt County residents always step up to help each other. #CharleeIsSafe #WeAreBullittCounty.” And that should have been the end of the story right there – but it wasn’t. While everyone was relieved to see Charlee back in her home, there were still some unanswered questions about the nature of her disappearance.
Some Unanswered Questions
You would think that Charlee being found and returned home would have been the fairytale ending to this epic story. But the truth was that between her disappearing and being found, some of the circumstances surrounding the case were riddled with mystery. There were details that just didn’t add up to the sheriff.
Of course, the authorities would have been a little skeptical that Wayne had randomly found Charlee in his backyard. Although it was confirmed that he had offered water to her and called 911, they couldn’t leave any stone unturned. And sure enough, more loose ends started to come to the surface.
It goes without saying, but this was certainly one of the most difficult things that Charlee’s family has ever been through. With that said though, the Bullitt County Sheriff suspects that Charlee didn’t necessarily go missing all by herself.
And Lisa, Charlee’s great-grandmother, had her own views on the suspicions: “It has been the most horrific thing my whole family has ever been through,” she said. “This whole scenario of them taking her and hiding her, and then the FBI shows up, and then they drop her off in the woods [...] that's ridiculous.” It was clear that something wasn’t adding up.
