The last thing that the sheriff wanted to do during this time was to flat-out speculate. But it was his job to piece together clues to detect whether other issues surrounding Charlee’s disappearance were at play. He did suspect that someone close to Charlee was responsible for her disappearing, to begin with.
He thought that it was sketchy for the little girl to live with her grandparents. He was alarmed by the dirty feet and the scratches. “My suspicion is there’s a custody issue between mother and grandmother,” he said. “I suspect maybe there’s something going on that we don’t know about yet.”
It goes without saying, but this was certainly one of the most difficult things that Charlee’s family has ever been through. With that said though, the Bullitt County Sheriff suspects that Charlee didn’t necessarily go missing all by herself.
And Lisa, Charlee’s great-grandmother, had her own views on the suspicions: “It has been the most horrific thing my whole family has ever been through,” she said. “This whole scenario of them taking her and hiding her, and then the FBI shows up, and then they drop her off in the woods [...] that's ridiculous.” It was clear that something wasn’t adding up.
As she held on tight to the stuffed animal that her grandfather gave to her, it was clear that Charlee had been through a lot for such as young girl over the last few days. But there seemed to be one thing completely off about the whole thing.
Even though she was still wearing her “Frozen” pajamas that she went missing in, there was one glaring detail that the authorities picked up on. She was not wearing a diaper, or any pants for that matter. This was yet another clue pointing to the conclusion that something was not quite right.
They Denied All Accusations
There is no denying that this was a bold statement to come from the sheriff. While it might have been true, it was certainly an accusation that took members of the community by surprise. And of course, Charlee’s family heard about the sheriff’s suspicions and were prepared to share their own side of the story.
According to Charlee’s great-grandmother, there was no ongoing custody battle, and Charlee’s mother visited her daughter every day to take care of her. However, this didn’t stop other members of the authorities from coming up with their own theories about the nature of this case.
One detail that only came up after Charlee was found was that her grandmother was experiencing some personal problems during the time. Most notably, she was going through some dependency struggles. So, it made sense that others in the sheriff’s office would deduce the following.
Quite possibly, Beth had a greater part to play in Charlee’s disappearance. Why? Because it may have been substance-induced. At the very least, some negligence may have been at play here. Whatever the case may be, it was growing increasingly clear that actions needed to be taken moving forward to give Charlee the best chance to succeed in life.
