Does anyone remember the era of the supermodel? The supermodels of the 90s were quintessential IT girls and celebrity goals. Some like Tyra Banks, Cindy Crawford, and Naomi Campbell remain in the limelight. Then there are others that you may or may not recognize today.
Linda Evangelista
Muse to photographer Steven Meisel, Linda Evangelista was the fashion industry’s most iconic model in the 90s. The Canadian model modeled for the covers of over 700 magazines: Cosmopolitan, ELLE, Harpers Bazaar, Vogue, W, Marie Claire, Rolling Stone, and Allure, among others.

When she made the news in 2021, it was for a very different reason. Evangelista filed a $50 million lawsuit against a dermatologist’s office where she underwent CoolSculpting sessions. What is CoolSculpting, you may ask? Essentially, a fat-freezing procedure that left her “brutally disfigured.” Evangelista lived in seclusion for close to five years recovering from the botched-up procedure.
Claudia Schiffer
Claudia Schiffer was a household name in the 90s fashion world. She was the face of Guess and Chanel – campaigns that propelled her to stardom. Fast forward to today, and Schiffer has continued to model – although the pace has slowed down.

In 2002, Schiffer launched a cashmere clothing line that was tremendously successful. She also released a self-titled book in 2017 to ring in her 30th anniversary in the fashion industry.
Karen Mulder
Karen Mulder was walking and posing for every major fashion label in the 90s. She modeled for Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Giorgio Armani, and Versace. Among others, she posed for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue – a highly sought-after fashion benchmark at the time.

In 2000, Mulder retired from modeling after struggling with depression. She also made some pretty big accusations about her former modeling bosses. Mulder spent months in a psychiatric hospital and had to fight her demons. Since then, she seems to be on the path to recovery. Today, Mulder frequently attends the Paris Fashion Week, charity events, and award shows in France.
Christy Turlington
Christy Turlington was the face of Calvin Klein’s Eternity campaign and her skyrocketed afterward. Throughout the ‘90s, Turlington was at the fore of campaigns for Prada, Chanel. Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent. Versace, and Valentino. She was only 17 when she starred in a music video for Duran Duran’s “Notorious.” And who can forget Turlington in one of the most enduring music videos of the decade – George Michael’s “Freedom.” Turlington features alongside other supermodels – Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Tatjana Patitz, and Linda Evangelista.

Turlington may have debuted decades ago, but her modeling career continues to shine. In 2008, she was on the cover of V magazine. She closed out the Marc Jacobs Autumn/Winter show in 2019. Turlington has also written editorial pieces for Huffington Post, Teen Vogue, and Marie Claire.
